Covers and pages from The Demon #11, #12, #13, and #16 by Jack Kirby and Mike Royer.
The first three issues in this final batch feature Kirby’s groovy take on the Frankenstein story. The pages are filled with funky little monster men and weird mad science machinery. The last issue has Etrigan go up against Morgaine Le Fey, his nemesis from way back at the start of the series.
It’s too bad Kirby didn’t get to do more of The Demon. One wonders what other films and corners of the horror genre he might have mined for inspiration. Still, the book went out on a relatively high note unlike some of his other stuff which kind of petered out. I’ve read a number of The Demon’s later appearances over the years and none of them were as fun and inventive as this original, genre-bending series.
