Three covers from Michael Moorcock’s Elric of Melniboné, the first book in the Elric saga. After devouring the original quartet of Hawkmoon stories I jumped right into this one. I found this volume to be a brief but gripping introduction to the character and his world. Elric is sort of omnipresent in the deeper realms of pop culture so it was neat to finally see what he’s all about. Unlike the rather one dimensional Dorian Hawkmoon, Elric is a character rich in conflict, torn between the selfish, cruel ways of his people and his own developing conscience. As with the Hawkmoon novels, the world-building here is top notch. I look forward to revisiting the Dragon Isle of Melniboné again soon. Too bad this series isn’t easier to come by at the moment.
